Centralized Log Management?  (N/A)

Hi.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a centralized event log management application for a Windows environment?

Here's my wish list:

  • I would like to manage the events logs of all of my servers from a single interface.  If I could manage the events logs of all PCs from that same interface, it would be even better!
  • I would like to be able to receive email notifications when errors and warnings occur.
  • Another nice feature would be the ability to build custom reports that filter certain events.
    • The filter should be able to include multiple Event ID #s.
    • Being able to automatically generate and email the report at regular intervals (say every 24 hours) would be great.
    • Or the ability to automatically generate an HTML or PDF-based report on a regular basis so that it could be linked to a web page would be swell, too.
  • The licensing should be able to be understood by non-lawyers.  In other words, the sales person shouldn't have to get back to me after consulting a licensing "specialist".
  • It shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Am I asking for too much?

See Ya,
Van

Welcome to the IT forum page!  This is a place to post questions, answers, and observations for all things technology.  Don't be shy!

Currently there is one forum: General Discussion.  As the name implies, it covers a broad range.  Post everything in this forum.

As time goes on, we may find the need to setup more focused forums.  For example, we might create a forum specifically for telecommunications issues (T1, QoS, VoIP, etc.).  We'll do this as the activity and demand arises.  For the time being, we're just sticking with "General Discussion".

Here are few tips for using the forum:

  • Anybody can view the postings in the forum.
  • Only registered users can post to the forum.
    • Registration is free.
    • Your personal information is kept confidential.
  • Registered users can "subscribe" to the forum or to an individual thread.
    • This means that you will receive an email message when the forum or thread receives a new posting.
    • To subscribe to the forum, click on the envelope icon in the lower left corner of the "IT Forum -> General Discussion" page.
      • This sends you an email notification whenever a new posting appears anywhere in the forum.  It doesn't matter what thread contains the new posting.
    • To subscribe to a specific thread only, click on the envelope icon in the lower left corner of the page when you are reading a posting in that thread.
      • This sends you an email notification whenever a new posting is added to that specific thread only.
  • !!! QUIRK WARNING!!!  For some reason, the forum always shows the posting date in Greenwhich Mean Time (GMT or UDT), which is about 5 hours earlier than the Eastern Time Zone.
    • I haven't been able to locate a time zone setting to fix this issue, as of yet.
    • I suspect that this will get fixed sometime down the road.

If you have any questions or problems with the forum (or any other part of the web site), or if you have a idea, please email me (mailto:van@vangor.net).

See Ya,
Van
