Introduction: As a user, there are a few procedures that you can perform on a regular basis to keep your computer in a good working order.

Step 1: Make sure that your antivirus software is up to date and perform a full scan. Click here for more detailed information.

Step 3: Disable all non-essential programs and services using the MSConfig utility. Click here for more detailed information.
Step 4: Use Windows Update to install all available security patches and bug fixes from Microsoft. Click here for more detailed information about using this utility.
Step 5: Delete temporary files. Click here for details about how to do this.
Step 6: Streamline Internet Options (Internet Explorer). Click here for details.
Step 7: Streamline Config.sys (or Config.NT). Click here for details.
Step 8: Remove any personal firewall software. Click here for details.
Step 9: Enable Resource Meter (Windows 95/98/ME only).
